DR HUGHES IS RETIRING
Please see an announcement from Dr Hughes regarding his upcoming retirement in June 2024;
For many this is the worst kept secret of the year.
After 37 years as a GP Partner I’ve finally & somewhat reluctantly decided to hang up my stethoscope & retire from the practice.
Hilary & I moved to Holmfirth in 1987 with two young children, and 37 years later we have four children & ten grandchildren. To the amusement of many & my own joy, thirteen of them being girls! It’s been a wonderful place to settle & bring up the family & an equally wonderful place to work.
I’m a passionate believer in the NHS & it’s been a huge privilege to spend the majority of my working life as a GP in the Holme Valley. I’ve enjoyed living where I work & hopefully have given something back to the community I live in.
I can honestly say that I still enjoy coming to work & it’s not without some considerable regret that I am retiring from the practice & for a little while I may occasionally be seen still doing the odd locum shift to help out when the practice is short staffed.
When I started we had five GPs, a part time practice manager & half a dozen part time receptionists. We now have an organisation of well in excess of 60 employed clinical & admin staff reflecting the huge changes in the way health care is delivered now compared to 30-40 years ago.
It’s been an amazing experience to be part of that change & I feel very proud and confident that I’m leaving a great team behind.
